Anybody Know Where I Can Find a Space Mechanic?

by Drewsil courtesy of Deviantart

No one has ever accused me of being a mechanic (nor will they) but when writing a science fiction story that takes place in a ship in outer space, like Han Solo, I kind have to be familiar with everything. It's not like when the ship breaks down they can take it to the nearest Pep Boys Star Ship Center, or can they?  Hmmm...that's a story for a different time.

Back to my point, for my science fiction novels 'Cold Warriors' and 'Ice and Peace' the carrier in which the majority of the story took place had to be, for the most part, self contained.  Right down to changing the oil in an engine in case it went down.

Now that I look back on it, creating the self contained world in which the crew lived in was the easy part.  The hard part was making it believable.  Case in point, space travel.

When ever anyone asks about my science fiction books the first thing that inevitably comes up is how the characters travel through space.  And I always answer the same way-- 'No they do not use Warp Speed.'  Why?  Because I just don't have enough money to go through a long drawn out court battle with Paramount Pictures over intellectual copy right for the use of the term.  So I tend to opt out of its use.

Then what do I use?  Well for long distance travel, the option that works best for me in the SFR genre is worm hole technology or some variation of it.  But what about when they are just driving along trying to get from planet A to planet B?  That's easy, a standard nuclear based engine will do.  This presents another problem.  When traveling in space, unlike on Earth where we have seat belts, inertia can be a cause for concern if and when the ship stops.  (Yes, I think about these things!)

Of course when I started writing the series, the only thing I knew about Classical Mechanics was that it had nothing to do with fixing my car and about inertia was that it something to do with a few PBS specials I'd seen.  So I started my research and set about learning how to stop a ship in space.

I came upon Sir Isaac Newton and his Laws of Motion.  In particular his first law which states, “Inertia is the resistance of any physical object to any change in its state of motion, including changes to its speed and direction. It is the tendency of objects to keep moving in a straight line at constant velocity. The principle of inertia is one of the fundamental principles of classical physics that are used to describe the motion of objects and how they are affected by applied forces.” (Wikipedia).

In other words, inertia refers to objects ability to stay in rest or motion until something else acts upon it. And that means a lot in space where there is no air resistance, gravity or a whole bunch of friction to slow something down.  By the way, I also touch upon the Third Law of Motion as well in a tongue and cheek style.

In the case of my space ship, the problem lay not in the ship stopping but the people.  Because of a mechanical failure, the commanding officer on the ship had cause for concern when applying the so called 'breaks' when they got to port.

Why? You see it's because of inertia. The people were inside the ship, therefore they were traveling at the same velocity as the ship. So when it stopped, they needed to stop 'moving' too.  But the equipment that did this was broken.  Can you hear my evil laugh?  I had so much fun writing this scene!  Here is it is from 'Ice and Peace'...

“Boatswain’s Mate,” Keegan called out as he stared at his coffee cup on the stand next to him. The liquid inside tilted instead of being level.

“Aye, Captain?”

“I’d like the status of—” The ship shuddered before he could finish the words. It did it again then groaned loudly from its bowels. “What the hell was that?”

Dumbfounded, the officer of the deck stared at him, wide-eyed.

“Sir,” she said, “I don’t know.”

“Find out.”

Stunned, she stood still.

Keegan frowned and barked, “Move it!”

“Yes, sir,” she replied, before scurrying out of the room.

He could only imagine what challenges he’d face on his first day back in command...

The air inside of Engine Room One on the Blanchard was musty and filled with the stench of lubricant. The loud clanking of a broken pump sounded through the room as various personnel did their best to shut it down, along with the engine it served, before it was too late.

“Sir,” one of the engineers called out, while approaching Keegan.

Her soot-stained face and jacket gave evidence to the battle she was having with the machine.

“It’s Inertial Dampener Number One. It’s gone. Apparently, the lubricator pump failed, and it locked up on us and blew,” she explained over the din.

Keegan’s swayed ever so slightly to the side as the damaged system began to affect the ship.

“Lieutenant, we’re traveling at 2C through free space.” He paused and braced himself against the side of a hatch. “How could something like this happen?”

The engineer blinked at him. “Sir. I’ll find out.”

“Well, how are we going to stop?” he asked, raising his voice in order to be heard.

“I don’t follow, sir,” she responded in an even tone.

“Let me rephrase. Lieutenant, at the speed we’re going, when we finally put on the brakes, we’ll be experiencing Newton’s Third Law in living color. So what’s going to keep us from being spots on the forward walls?”

In order to work in this area, everyone had to know physics better than Einstein. So if she had any bright ideas, he was ready to hear them.

“Sir, we lost only one dampener. We should be fine with the other three. Therefore, we have enough stability to make it to port where I can get the parts I need to make the repairs.”

“All right,” he said checking his watch. “We’ll be at Eckhardt in ten minutes. Fix what you can, and I’ll get you to port.”

“Yes, sir.”

“Carry on.”

“And, sir?”

“Yes, Lieutenant?”

“Steer us a clear path until we get them all back online. We can’t afford a bumpy ride," she replied.

“I’ll do my job. You just watch those other three. And tell everybody to hold on.”

Keegan watched the engineer head back to her station. He rubbed the bridge of his nose and sighed. A dampener blowing was one thing, but getting the new crew to ensure a smooth ride was another.

So there you have it.  All that research for one and a quarter's scene!  I like to think that it added a little gravity to the situation.  If not, it certainly added another layer tension for the commanding officer to deal with.  As for me, my days as a mechanic are over.  But hopefully with these tips, yours are just beginning.

Summer Lovin' Blog Hop

There's something about hot nights and steamy days that bring out the sexy in all of us. Less clothes, suntans, holidays...what is it that you love about summer? Join us in our blog hop and blog about anything to do with summer. What are your best summer reads? What's your favorite thing about summer? Perhaps you have an excerpt that will get us all hot under the collar. Whatever it is you want to blog about, why don't you join us on our blog hop and have a bit of fun along the way!

The hop will run for 4 days until 8th August.

One of the best summers I had was on the beach of Lake Huron.  It had been a goal of mine to go there for some time and it did not disappoint.  Lake Huron is so huge, when on the lakeshore you can not see the land in this case Canada, on the the other side.  With the beautiful blue water and sky and the perfect breeze coming off the water, I felt like I was on a beach in California.  My friends and I spent only a weekend there but it was all I need to cool off from the hot and muggy heat that was south and west of us.

The entire time I was there, I kept thinking now I see why people love reading books while on the beach because it would have been a perfect place to settle in with my favorite romance novel!

So in honor of that, here's a selection for your summer reading.

Blurb--

A New Threat? After a long and vicious war, peace is on the horizon for Earth and its allies. However, a series of mysterious attacks on several secret military installations causes hostilities to rise once again.

Redemption. Having left under a cloud of disgrace, retired Marine Colonel Medoro Keegan is called back to duty.

Bound. His wife Caitlin, the only surviving member of her team, chooses to embrace life, albeit grudgingly, as a cryo soldier. Seen as sub-human, she is forced to serve a planet that denies her rights as a person.

Driven. Guided by their sense of duty and belief that some things are bigger than them, they are determined to risk it all.

Hope. The cost of war is high. Can their love and marriage survive? Or will it be killed off by the very same mission that brought them together?

An Excerpt--

Caitlin was a sight for sore eyes. She was beautiful. Her petite frame was perfectly accented by the curves of her figure. And her brown eyes and coffee-brown skin was smooth, creamy.

Standing at attention, she did not meet his gaze. Though it was customary not to do as a sign of military courtesy, he could tell she was not doing it for that reason. Her gaze was different. Circling her, he tried to see if he could catch her watching him out of the corner of her eye. In fact, she appeared to be staring blankly ahead.

Peering directly at her, he spoke in a soft tone. “At ease.”

She relaxed.

“Cate. Can you hear me?”

“Yes, sir,” she responded mechanically.

Pain pierced his insides. She was definitely not there. Keegan placed his hands on his hips and hung his head in defeat. The one thing that was supposed to go right did not. For whatever reason, they had placed her in a deeper state of mental control than she’d ever been in. He controlled the hostile emotions brewing with him. Touching her face gently, he felt her icy skin.

This is unacceptable! Not here. I will not let this happen here. Not under my command.

“Chief, listen up,” he said in an authoritative tone. He knew in this state, it was the only way he could speak to her and still have her respond.

“Yes, sir.” Her gaze became even more distant.

Her response fueled his anger. “You are going to hightail it down to the doc and receive a full examination. Tell him it is based on my orders. He will know what to do. Is that clear?”

“Yes, sir.”

Knowing that she was under the influence of cryo neurotransmitters, Keegan figured the only way to combat it was to get someone to reverse it. They usually wore off once she was away from the stimulus triggers for a long period of time. But considering her stimulus triggers were high-ranking officers in uniform and combat situations, being around here meant she was going to be in a drone zone for a very long time. The last thing he needed was a zombie on board, especially one in charge of the lives others.

Only the jerks in psyche warfare thought doing this to someone would be a good idea. As long as he was running the ship, none of that would be allowed. There weren’t going to be any super zombies soldiers on board his ship. And he’d rollover in his grave before he let them do it to his wife.

“After you come back from the doc, you will report to me, understood?”

“Yes, sir.”

“Are there any questions?”

“No, sir.”

“Dismissed.”

She did an about face before leaving the room. Keegan clasped his hands behind his back. In the blink of an eye, his joy had turned to sorrow. Now faced with the responsibility of looking after his wife, he wondered how could he handle the burden of command and still protect the woman he loved.

The final edits are in and Ice and Peace- The Cold Warriors Universe will be out soon.  I know you've all been waiting so here is a sneak peek!

“Sir,” a soft voice, feminine and sweet, beckoned his attention. He knew the voice, like he knew himself. His heart skipped a beat.

Rising slowly from his chair, Keegan cleared his throat and straightened his uniform. Suddenly, the room seemed unbearably long as he walked the three feet or so to be near her.

As he took in every detail of her, he was stunned silent. She wore a Marine Corps uniform with Navy insignia, with her hair neatly pinned off her neck and shoulders. Her clothes were pressed with a crease that could cut a major artery and her demeanor was impeccable. Something was not right.

Still, Caitlin was a sight for sore eyes. She was beautiful. Her petite frame was perfectly accented by the curves of her figure. And her brown eyes and coffee-brown skin was smooth, creamy.

You Scared the Hell Out of Me...And I Liked it. Do it Again!

Like so many people, I awaited JJ Abrams next installment in Star Trek franchise like it was the Second Coming. Prior to his first foray into the Trekosphere, I had never heard of him and had no idea why so many people thought he was cool. After watching it, I knew why.

The first movie was exciting, full of energy and enough plot to keep a trekkie and none trekkie alike on the edge of their seat. So of course it was only natural that I camp out in line to see the sequel. (Yes, I am that kind of a geek but due to my laziness, lack of funds and general aversion to standing in long lines—so I opted out of the midnight Wednesday showing and went to see it that Friday instead.) And I loved it so much, I saw it again the next day. Squeeee!!

Okay, for those who of you didn't see it, I can promise you there are no spoilers in this post but those of you who have seen it and have been bitten by Khan's rapturous charms—then you'll know exactly what I'm talking about.

I have to admit, through both showings, I was firmly in the Enterprise's crews corner, all the way no questions asked. Why? Because, I gave up bad boys back in the 80's. You see, once I got through my Kiefer Sutherland's portrayal of the vampire leader- David in the Lost Boys, stage, I realized loving bad boys was generally not good for me. They generally were self centered egotists who left destruction be it physical and/or emotional destruction in their wake. Plus in real life, they were generally mean and I'm not into that.

But in the filmdom, fangirlosphere, I'd occasionally fall off the wagon when I'd come across old favorites like Darth Vader (original series) or a new baddie like Loki (whose character was once described as profoundly manipulative. So much so that it would behoove anyone around him not to trust him. Not even for a second. Heck even his own brother chided him for his inability to be sincere).

Yet like any girl with her head screwed on right, I remembered what my Momma always said, “choose a nice man cause the other ones will just use you and break your heart. Not to mention if they were of the movie variety, they'd break other things too. Like the kind of stuff that would require a really skilled surgical team to fix.

Then came Benedict Cumberbatch. Familiar with his work as the very odd yet intense Sherlock Holmes, he somehow endeared me to the character whom I've always found well...boring. His Sherlock Holmes on the other hand was complicated, intense, genius and ADD with a bit of Autism thrown in for good measure. So before seeing ST: Into Darkness, I knew Benny could pull off the role as a baddy.

But when I saw him on screen and heard that deep base vocal timbre, I was like---Dayum. His ability to stand, be silent and command your obedience made me well freakin' scared. I was like don't they have mental hospitals for people like you? But the more, I saw him and learned about why he did what he did and the passion behind his resolve—not to mention his incredibly taut muscles...I felt like Morticia Addams tied to the bed staring with love in her eyes at her beloved Gomez... “You you were unhinged...like some desperate demon....You frightened me. Do it again.”

And knowing Benedict's Khan, he would. Over and over and over again. I am Khan's slave.
