Excerpt:

Involuntarily, she shivered. That voice! His smell! Coupled with his looks—he was dangerous on so many levels.
She flashed again, two more miles up the trail. Her logical mind informed her that he’d followed her twice already. She hadn’t even known it was possible.
He appeared in front of her, an eyebrow arched. “Did you have something to do with the humans’ deaths?”
At the mention of her parents, she went wild.
For all the good it did.
She punched, she kicked, she kneed. All easily deflected. He clasped her arms to pull her toward him and spin her around. Both of her legs pumped and flailed, trying to kick back into his shins or loosen his grip, but he restrained her like it was something he did every day.
From his domineering presence and grim demeanor, maybe he did.
He jolted her so hard her teeth clattered. It stunned her into momentary stillness. When she tensed to start all over again, he repeated the movement—harder. Her breath whooshed out like she’d been heimliched.
She struggled to inhale against his vice-like grip. He was an immobile wall at her back. Humiliatingly enough, she wanted to seek comfort in that wall.
Tears pricked her eyes. She sniffled.
His grip loosened, then tightened again. “Don’t think that’ll work on me,” he sneered into her ear.
The dam broke and sob after sob escaped her.

Excerpt

“One would think you would know a little more about the lifestyle, considering the clientele you serve.”

Her frown became a glower. “What the fuck is that supposed to mean?”

“I’ve been to your shop. I’ve seen your ‘BDSM section’.”

She frowned. “Why do you say it like that?” With air quotes?

“It’s hardly comprehensive.”

Her lips flapped. “It’s perfectly comprehensive.”

But he just snorted. “At any rate, it’s pretty clear you don’t understand a thing about the life, if you think it’s about a man bullying a woman. In fact, the Dom is not the one in control,” he said. “Not in a truly healthy D/s relationship. The sub calls the shots. Draws the lines. It’s a partnership, Bella, but the sub controls everything.”

She crossed her arms over her chest. “That is hard to believe.”

“I’d be happy to give you a demonstration.” The way he said it, with that quirk of his dark brow, the glint in his eyes, sent a sizzle of annoyance—and something else—through her.

“Fuck you, Holt.”

He grinned. “Okay.”

Goddamn it. She wasn’t sure which annoyed her more. His simmering sensuality or his goddamn teasing. Both were nearly irresistible. She hated that her lips tweaked in a smile. He would take a smile as encouragement, she was certain of it.

Sure enough, he took that last, lethal step and yanked her into his arms, sealing them together. His was hot, hard, huge. She tipped up her chin and glared at him, opened her mouth to say something else, something pithy and snarly. Something that would drive him away and give her room to fucking breathe—

But he didn’t give her time. No time to think of something pithy. No time to prepare. No time to shore up her defenses.

His mouth took hers. There was no other way to describe it. He covered her, smothered her, soaked her with his taste and his scent, suffused her with sensation. The rub of his lips over hers, the nibbles, the nips, the bold forays of his tongue, all scrambled her brain. His hands cupped her ass, rubbing her against his body, dragging her groin over his. Somewhere in the back of her mind, she was aware that he was guiding her, moving her, walking her backwards in a relentless drive to crawl inside her.

And then she hit the wall.

Literally.

He backed her up against the wood paneling of the great room and pressed against her, hard. His cock was like a stone. A fat, throbbing stone. Almost painful against the tender flesh of her belly.

A flash of pure, unadulterated lust snarled through her. Because he was hard. For her.

Oh sure, he’d probably be hard if he was mouth fucking Kristi here against the wood paneling. Or Emily. Or Lucy.

Or Lassie.

But this one was for her.

She knew she should push him away. As goddamn aggressive as he was, Holt would respect a “No” from a woman he didn’t have a contract with. But something deep within her soul howled at the prospect of ending this. Just yet.

It was too fucking thrilling.

A chance like this would never come again. Not in a million years.

She could fuck him tonight. Have a crazy, dirty, sweaty fuckfest tonight and then tomorrow, blame it on the whiskey.

His lips released hers, but only so he could move to her neck, to work her, suckle her, nibble on the sensitive screaming skin there. Bella threw back her head so he had better access. She lifted her leg and wrapped it around his waist, plastering her slit against the monstrosity bulging at the juncture of his thighs.

“Shit,” he growled, undulating against her. Sizzles of delight washed through her in waves, concentric, fucking phenomenal waves. She scored his scalp in a rake of need.

“You’re not tying me up,” she grunted.

He lifted his head. His scorching gaze slammed through her, making her clit throb, her pussy clench. A warm wetness dampened her inner thighs. Her panties were soaked. “You’re in charge here, Bella,” he said, his voice breaking on the words. “You make the rules.”

“And no fucking whips and chains.” He chuckled. She hated that he chuckled, so she fisted his hair and yanked. “And no goddamn nipple clamps.”

“Yes, ma’am.”

As though she’d reminded him she did, in fact, have nipples, he cupped her breasts and thumbed them, then brought his fingers together. Tightly. The pinch made her knees go weak. She hissed a noise, something between a sigh and a feral groan.

“You like that? You like it a little rough?” His voice was silky and smooth. Practiced. As though he’d said these words before. To thousands of women.

“Fuck you, Holt.”  She glared at him. When he grinned, laughed at her vehemence, she sank her nails into his scalp and wrenched him closer. This time she took his mouth. Ravaged his mouth. Fucked his mouth. She thrust in her tongue, explored, dominated him.

Yeah. He’d fucked legions. But he would remember her. He would fucking remember her.

She’d make damn sure of it.

ONE LIFE
A TEDDY OWENS STORY

by

L.A. Cadieux

…from Evernight Teen
YA (romance, paranormal, shifters, suspense, contemporary)
77,000 words, Editor's Pick

Intent on leaving her troubled childhood in the past, snow-obsessed sixteen year old Teddy Owens has moved from Texas to her uncle's secluded Rocky Mountain estate—a beautiful place, but colder than she imagined. Curious about her surroundings she ignores the persistent advice of new friends and digs around to uncover the allure of the mysterious estate—only to discover her friends have terrifying secrets of their own. With each new revelation, Teddy is thrust further into a clandestine underworld where she is hunted for her dormant supernatural power…the ability to save just one person from death.

After her family's sordid history of betrayal is unearthed, Teddy’s world is rocked when she must travel to New York City and take an oath promising her power to an arrogant heir of the underworld, Leevi Koivu. Can she trust him?

And in the end someone she loves, but cannot save, will die.

Excerpt:

“Admit it, you’re a mess.” My words were thick with accusation as I showed her the bottle. The lines separating a mother from her daughter began to blur, the tighter my fist clenched around exhibit #1: the medication bottle. “I found this in the trash.”

Angelique placed the soda she’d been sipping onto the kitchen counter. “Stop worrying about me. Honey, I’m fine. It was an accident—those merely fell into the garbage earlier,” she said. A bead of condensation rolled down the side of the aluminum can, seeping into a chip in the counter.

“Do you take me for an idiot? The trash isn’t exactly accessible.” I pointed to the cupboard beneath the kitchen sink. As I leaned forward my wet hair hung over my face. I’d gone and dyed my locks red a few weeks earlier. Fortunately, the color had faded after two washes.

“It’s completely plausible it fell under the sink,” she argued. Angelique turned to search the deserted street outside our tattered screen door—her actions were a clear indication of what I’d suspected all along.

“Please, look at me for one minute, and don’t start with one of your conspiracy theories—seriously—I can’t take another. This full bottle was in the washroom trash. I found it after taking a shower.”

A knowing expression dawned on her face…she’d been caught in another lie.

“You haven’t been taking your prescription. Why?” I shoved a hand into the pocket of my cut-off shorts and pulled out the telephone wiretap.

Angelique’s eyes narrowed in on it. “Teddy, give me the bug,” she demanded, placing a thin hand on my shoulder.

I tore out of her grasp. “In case you missed the memo, this isn’t normal. It’s not okay to spy on me. Angelique, I’m not your naïve little girl anymore.” I held up the listening device.

“Your sickness is worse than ever. Your paranoia is out of control—you need help. I’m tired of trying to fix it.”

“I’m fine,” Angelique shrilled. Her hair was matted to her forehead, saturated with the humidity. “You have to trust me. I have my reasons.”

“I want to trust you.” I noted how her cheeks and eyes had sunken in. God, she wasn’t eating again. Her anxiety had worsened significantly since my sixteenth birthday. Lately, she’d watched me like I was going to burst into a man-eating tarantula at any moment. “You make it hard.”

“You can’t possibly understand.” She reached over to tug at my arm, resulting in a tussle over the bug. “Give me that already—it’s not yours,” she ordered.

As I ducked out of the way, she jerked my arm. “Let me go!” I tried to snatch my arm away.

“Please, can you try to keep your voice down?” She released me, only to glance outside in search of her imaginary tormentors.

“Why can’t you try to be a normal mother?” I asked, red-faced.

“It was never in the cards for you, honey.” She pushed a limp strand of brunette hair out of her face.

“You don’t listen, not even to the doctors,” I said sadly. “Try to keep care of yourself.”

Taking aim, I flung the bottle against the refrigerator and watched with disdain as it burst open, sending pills spewing across the floor. Many of them disappeared into a filthy crack in the linoleum floor under the counter.

“I’m not your babysitter!” Angelique stood rigidly, staring down at the pills. Considering her current state of mental health, and knowing my mother, she was probably asking herself if they could possibly be poisoned.

I opened my mouth, then closed it, and then opened it again. “Forget this—I’m done.” I threw my fists up into the air.

“Teddy,” Angelique shouted as I ran from the house. “Get back here this instant,” she ordered. “It’s dangerous—”

I slammed the squeaking screen door behind me, cutting her off. If I wasn’t so livid I’d have taken notice of the police car sitting at the end of our street, but it was too late: the cops were stepping out of the car. An officer waved me over. Angelique was going to lose it on them, and it was my fault.

Making my way toward the cops, I started to panic. What should I say?

“Hello there,” the first officer said. “Is everything okay?”

“Yeah, nothing to report.” I stared down at my sneakers, not wanting to meet their cynical gazes.

“What’s your name?” the second asked.

“Teddy Owens, sir.”

“How old are you?” He leaned against his cruiser, tilting his head to the side to consider me.

“Sixteen—at the beginning of August.” I cringed as the screen door on our house banged shut. The officers wore amused expressions as Angelique stomped toward us. They wouldn’t be smiling if they knew what she was capable of.

“It’s going to be one of those nights,” the first officer said under his breath.

It was one of the last times I’d play the role of an innocent spectator.

Can’t take the Trekkie outta the girl!

Okay, this is dating myself here, but I was actually alive during Star Trek’s initial run. Yep, probably not old enough to know what I was watching, but it must have burned a path through my retinas to my brain. My mom even met Leonard Nimoy at the small local airport when I was a little kid. He signed her grocery list! But the clincher that sealed my fate as a sci-fi girl was the fact mom sat me down on a chair and made me watch the moon landing on TV on July 20, 1969. Yep, I remember it well. That and Watergate – which was horribly, horribly boring to my youthful mind. But back to scifi.

As I got a little older, Star Blazers came on the TV before school. I loved it! I totally dug that show. I still do, as a matter of fact. Remember Derek Wildstar and Nova?  Now that was an early SciFi Romance I got into.  It started showing in 1979 and ran until 1984.

Then came Battlestar Gallactica. What can I say? Yum! Sexy men. The galaxy a hot mess. What’s there for a girl not to love? I think I even had a Dirk Benedict poster! Was there romance on that show? Probably a little. But there certainly was on Star Trek The Next Generation. TNG pretty much kept me in SFR for a long time to come. True, it didn’t always end well for the lovers … but it was TV, not a book.

Later on, I think the SciFi got harder and the romance a little riskier. A little more UF in feel perhaps. Aliens paired with other species. More violence on the shows (such as Andromeda). Or so it seemed to me. And sometimes the lovers were never truly united – like Mal and Inara on Firefly.

Star Trek Voyager, Deep Space Nine and Enterprise had some good love stories too. Which brings us pretty much to present day. (Let’s just skip over Farscape, shall we?) I think the last SciFi show I watched on TV was cancelled after five eppies or so. Does anybody else miss Defying Gravity? I was totally hooked!

Thankfully we have a slew of SFR romance authors to keep us reading these days and give us our HEA’s or HFN’s. And to inspire us would-be writers of SFR. I have serial story in the works – I actually have the cover done already! – that will be coming out soon. In the meantime, I have straight SF (okay, yeah, there’s penetration – twice! *cheeky grin*) book out with two other authors called “Tentacles.” If you have time to check out it out, do. The book is now FREE on Smashwords http://www.smashwords.com/books/view/261379 to coincide with the May 16th release of the new Star Trek movie, “Into Darkness.” Coupon code is: SU36K.

I hope to come back and visit Clare soon when the first installment of my SFR is out. In the meantime, here’s a snippet for y’all and I’m sure you can spot the areas where Star Trek was a huge influence! (Oddly, so was ZOE IDOLO).

Happy reading!

The Trouble with Memories

Aviation Base Vault 9, Huldra Cliffs, Thalius Prime
February 14, 2353
0800 Standard Time

Lucy stood outside the door to the viewport room, her body braced and stiff, as though her life might end as soon as the door opened. In a way, it would. In just a few hours, everything she’d dreamed of, worked for, and the life she’d planned for, she’d throw away forever. The person to blame for that was Cal Sykes and in under thirty seconds, she’d set eyes on him for the very last time.

Her schedule pad beeped, and she made the mistake of glancing down at and seeing today’s date: February 14th.  Fragg almighty, how had she done this to herself? In all the weeks of careful planning she hadn’t noticed her off-date was freakin’ Valentine’s Day?  “How ironic,” she muttered.

She shook her already aching head and curled her fingers around the tray so hard her fingers went numb. Let’s get this over with. There’s no point in hoping for a change in him anyway. It’s been too long.

Drawing in a deep breath, she lifted her chin and angled her access badge towards the door’s scanner. The doors whished open without hesitation, giving her a good view of his backside. The only side she’d seen in the last eighteen months. She clenched her teeth and stepped inside.

Captain Sykes stood in the same position she found him every morning when she delivered the day’s orders: next to the high windowed wall watching the sleek faster-than-light fighters he’d once flown roar past on their training runs, engines glowing in the early twin-sun dawn.

As usual, he did not acknowledge her arrival. Didn’t twitch a muscle anywhere on his rigid frame. However, his eagle-like eyes followed every dip and swoop the fighters made as though he could force his consciousness into one of their cockpits by sheer force of will and fly it, if only he concentrated hard enough.

He’d looked at her with that intensity once, too. But in the eighteen months since he’d been back from the Mars mission he’d never even glanced at her – no matter how she’d tried to entice him. Long-standing frustration created a knot in her stomach that traveled upwards, picking up anger before settling over her shoulders like a mantle, causing them to tense. This is it. He’s obviously made his choice. Now I’m making mine.

She glared at his reconstituted mashed potato, sauerkraut and bratwurst breakfast, then at him. How in the hell could he live on that diet and expect to see the ass end of 60 anyway? Not that it should matter to her anyway. He’d made it quite clear he didn’t want any further involvement.

“Your breakfast.” More quietly she hissed, “Sir.”

When he didn’t respond – not even his usual grunt – she stepped closer. “I said, your breakfast, sir. Where would you like me to put it?” Her teeth ground together as her mind instantly supplied a few suggestions.

The fighters made another pass and he seemed to sway in their wake. In fact, he closed his eyes as if savoring the moment. As if lost in some invisible lover’s embrace. Not hers.

Damn but that hurt.

“How about here?” She didn’t merely drop the platter, she slammed it downward, adding an extra helping of gravity to the potatoes, mustard, and ketchup, so that the tray crashed onto the floor and sent ceramic shards scattering. The tray’s destruction echoed off the windows, crooning sweet vengeance to her ears.

He at last turned his head, one eyebrow raised, cold eyes assessing.

“Breakfast is served, sir,” she snarled, hands fisted at her sides. “Enjoy. Your. Meal.” Quick, purposeful strides carried her to the door. Her bags lay packed on her bed and ready, her resignation already drafted and in her outbox.

“One moment, Lieutenant.”

Oh hell.

Airplanes: Or, You Can Learn the Weirdest Stuff While Writing Romance- Plus a Giveaway!

My new release, Lapses of Memory, is the story of love on a plane. Sort of. It does follow the adventures of hero and heroine as they meet every few years flying to exotic places.
In our story, Sydney Bellek’s love for Elian Davies is reignited each time they meet, but in the long years following each encounter she forgets him. For his part, Elian knows from the age of seven that they are meant for each other, but when she finally understands he has lost his memory—literally.  Can she make him remember her? Will their new love be enough to replace the old one?

Meanwhile,  her daughter Olivia chronicles the ups and downs of her parents’ romance, making it difficult to concentrate on her own dilemma—how to choose between the rich and dashing Rémy de Beaumec, who wants to take her around the world, and the strong, silent, American-to-the-core, Benjamin Knox, who only wants to make her happy.

Since the story is spread out over about forty-five years, I had to do quite a bit of research about aircraft—i.e., which planes would be in service and routed to my required destination in any particular year. The characters generally met every six to eight years, and I wanted to coordinate that both with world events and with advances in airplanes. Amazingly enough, it all fit very well.  It was fascinating to discover how quickly airplane technology and design had evolved. And each airplane came with a colorful nickname, just like a boat.

Sydney’s first flight in 1958 took place on the Boeing 377 Stratocruiser. Based on the B29 bomber, the Stratocruiser, known as the “Ocean liner of the air” epitomized luxury air travel in the 1950s, complete with sleeping berths and lower level lounge. Eight years later the Boeing 707, the first civilian jetliner, harbinger of the Jet Age, took to the skies along with our Sydney and Elian. There are many myths surrounding the naming of the 707 (based on the prototype called the Dash 80)—the most likely being that the marketing department thought Seven-Oh-Seven was catchier than plain old 700. Only seven years later, in 1974, Sydney takes the DC 7C, the “Seven Seas,” to Egypt. McDonnell Douglas' largest and last aircraft powered by piston engines, the Seven Seas was one of the first airliners capable of nonstop transatlantic crossings.

Five years after that Sydney boarded the brand new Boeing 747-100, the “Queen of the Skies.” The first wide-bodied airliner and at the time the largest and heaviest, the Queen of the Skies opened up international travel to millions with its great carrying capacity and fuel-efficient turbofans, allowing our heroes to arrive in Iran just before the revolution breaks out. In 1983, they take the “the Big Top” (Boeing 747-300) named for its stretched upper deck, to Beirut to cover the civil war in Lebanon. The new version could reach  much longer distances at twice the speed as the 747 they’d flown in 1967. On the return trip she tries the new Airbus—a big lumbering plane, the workhorse of the skies. By 1987 the supersonic transport—the Concorde—took her to Paris, and her last trip finds her on the 787, the “Dreamliner.”

I hope everyone enjoys the excerpt. I’d like to offer a pdf of Lapses of Memory to the reader who comes up with the most imaginative name for an airplane. Be sure to leave your email address in the body of the comment.

EXCERPT (R): Gurney Sex

She walked into a small storeroom. A wheeled gurney sat in the middle and the walls were lined with shelves of medical supplies. “This must be the first aid closet.”

Elian picked up a box marked TONGUE DEPRESSORS and hefted it. “Let’s hope no one needs these for a while.”

She sat on the gurney and bounced. “Seems comfortable enough.”

He said nothing.

“Elian?”

“Yes?”

“I might remember a boy in Tangier. He had a cowlick, and pointed ears like an elf’s, and…and…a sharp chin. And he smelled like licorice.”

He moved toward her. “Anise.”

“All right, anise.”

Their eyes locked. “Sydney?”

“Yes?”

“Kiss me.”

She floated toward him, fetching up against his chest, where she rested, bumping gently. Her head rose like a helium-filled balloon, her lips drawn inexorably toward his. She hesitated, suddenly afraid. What if this is real?

“It is real, Sydney. It’s always been real. You just refuse to recognize it. Or me.” His hands went to either side of her face.

The wall crumbled. Tears falling, she wrapped her arms around him and kissed him. They stood swaying, holding on only by mouth, only breaking apart to allow a frenzy of kisses to rain on each other. Hand between her breasts, Elian bent Sydney back and gently pushed her onto the gurney. He kissed her throat and planted kisses down her sternum as he unbuttoned the safari blouse. Motionless, she concentrated on the burning spots where his lips had touched her skin. When he reached her belly button he undid the zipper and continued on.

She writhed on the bed, hoping, hoping he wouldn’t stop. Her pussy dribbled, soaking the silk panties. She said not a word. He tugged at the pants, letting them drop on the floor and buried his face in her vagina. She felt the orgasm approaching, a fast train on a slow track, and pushed his face away. “Come to me.”

He lifted his head to look at her face, his own muddied with desire. In one swift movement, he tore his jeans off and threw them aside. He climbed up on the gurney. As in her long ago dream, his cock pulsed red, beating against her belly. With one hand he spread her thighs and let his penis run up along the inner flesh and deep into her. The gurney began to roll but neither of them paid any attention. He pressed into her, a steadily accelerating motion, reaching ever closer to her heart. She closed with him, so near her nipples grazed his chest, her knees touched behind his back.

They rolled back and forth, a symbiotic wave crashing against the shore, until she whispered, “Elian, we’re there…oh….Elian.” Her clitoris trembled and gave in, just as the gurney hit the wall with a crash. They heard a shout.

“Quick, quick.” He tossed her clothes at her and quickly pulled on his jeans. Except for a slight puffing, he showed no evidence of what they had just done. Sydney stifled the stab of pain his cold dispassion gave her—blue-lined by Elian—and followed his orders.

The shouts had died down, and the two quietly left the room, sidling along the wall until they reached the main terminal. “You have your ticket?” he murmured. She nodded. “The Middle East Airlines counter is down to the left—now run!” and he gave her a mighty shove. She didn’t have time to argue. Behind her a uniformed brigade marched into the terminal, singling out foreigners and checking their passports. She handed the stewardess her boarding pass and hurried out to the plane.

As she reached the bottom step of the airstairs leading up into the plane, she felt a hand on her shoulder. “Elian!” She turned in relief, but before her stood a stranger, a young Iranian boy. He held out a folded note.
She took it and read. “Sydney, I forgot something in the room. Go quickly, don’t look back.

I’ll find you again. I’ve always remembered you. Someday you’ll do the same.”

I’d love to hear from you!

Spring Is In the Air Blog Hop!

Yes Spring is finally here!  And for most it means the end of cold weather and the beginning of lawn mowing season!

We usually associate it is a time of rebirth and the awakening of the world from a long winter slumber.  Many cultures often associated this time of year with fertility or mating rituals associated with a hope for a bountiful future harvest.

Not such a bad thing if you are a farmer.  Or a bird or animal looking for a mate.  The hard part about finding a mate is getting the right one to look your way.

In the animal kingdom, generally its the male who exhibits all the fancy behavior and beautiful plumage in his constant attempt to ensure the passage of his genetic signature to the next generation.

Do you like his plumage?

But we females, as the bearer of the offspring, have an important role in not only choosing the right mate but showing them we have not only the looks but the strength to make it as a potential mate and/or bearer of offspring.

Often our choice in a mate is subconscious one.  From the look of their eyes, to the shape of their body to the gentle tickle of their scent against our nose.  It all tells us about the genes that our suitor carries.

Did you even know the human penis has been selected through sperm competition. It has been selected to displace seminal fluids that were implanted within the female reproductive tract by a rival male.  The thrusting action which occurs during sexual intercourse manually removes seminal fluid out of the cervix area from a previous mating.

Okay so what if you haven't gotten that far?  And you see the man of your dreams and you want him but you don't know if you can have him?  Not to mention the fact that he has a habit of seeing you when you look like hell in a world where you're treated like dirt?

That's what Caitlin Driskoll encounters when she Lt. Col. Medoro Keegan.

In my book Cold Warriors

Caitlin Driskoll is left in cryogenic stasis for nearly a century.  Awakened and drafted into a war she knows nothing about.  She is expected to defend a world where her kind is despised and expendable.  Too her surprise, she discovers love and respect from the one man who can’t be associated with her.

Lieutenant Colonel Medoro Keegan has spent a lifetime in the Marines. With no family to speak of, the Corps and his ship, the USS Blanchard, are all the loved ones he needs…until Caitlin sparks a fire within, that threatens to consume him if he doesn’t walk away.

Will he choose a life of certainty in the only world he knows or give it all to Caitlin and run the risk of losing someone, yet again?
