Anybody Know Where I Can Find a Space Mechanic?

by Drewsil courtesy of Deviantart

No one has ever accused me of being a mechanic (nor will they) but when writing a science fiction story that takes place in a ship in outer space, like Han Solo, I kind have to be familiar with everything. It's not like when the ship breaks down they can take it to the nearest Pep Boys Star Ship Center, or can they?  Hmmm...that's a story for a different time.

Back to my point, for my science fiction novels 'Cold Warriors' and 'Ice and Peace' the carrier in which the majority of the story took place had to be, for the most part, self contained.  Right down to changing the oil in an engine in case it went down.

Now that I look back on it, creating the self contained world in which the crew lived in was the easy part.  The hard part was making it believable.  Case in point, space travel.

When ever anyone asks about my science fiction books the first thing that inevitably comes up is how the characters travel through space.  And I always answer the same way-- 'No they do not use Warp Speed.'  Why?  Because I just don't have enough money to go through a long drawn out court battle with Paramount Pictures over intellectual copy right for the use of the term.  So I tend to opt out of its use.

Then what do I use?  Well for long distance travel, the option that works best for me in the SFR genre is worm hole technology or some variation of it.  But what about when they are just driving along trying to get from planet A to planet B?  That's easy, a standard nuclear based engine will do.  This presents another problem.  When traveling in space, unlike on Earth where we have seat belts, inertia can be a cause for concern if and when the ship stops.  (Yes, I think about these things!)

Of course when I started writing the series, the only thing I knew about Classical Mechanics was that it had nothing to do with fixing my car and about inertia was that it something to do with a few PBS specials I'd seen.  So I started my research and set about learning how to stop a ship in space.

I came upon Sir Isaac Newton and his Laws of Motion.  In particular his first law which states, “Inertia is the resistance of any physical object to any change in its state of motion, including changes to its speed and direction. It is the tendency of objects to keep moving in a straight line at constant velocity. The principle of inertia is one of the fundamental principles of classical physics that are used to describe the motion of objects and how they are affected by applied forces.” (Wikipedia).

In other words, inertia refers to objects ability to stay in rest or motion until something else acts upon it. And that means a lot in space where there is no air resistance, gravity or a whole bunch of friction to slow something down.  By the way, I also touch upon the Third Law of Motion as well in a tongue and cheek style.

In the case of my space ship, the problem lay not in the ship stopping but the people.  Because of a mechanical failure, the commanding officer on the ship had cause for concern when applying the so called 'breaks' when they got to port.

Why? You see it's because of inertia. The people were inside the ship, therefore they were traveling at the same velocity as the ship. So when it stopped, they needed to stop 'moving' too.  But the equipment that did this was broken.  Can you hear my evil laugh?  I had so much fun writing this scene!  Here is it is from 'Ice and Peace'...

“Boatswain’s Mate,” Keegan called out as he stared at his coffee cup on the stand next to him. The liquid inside tilted instead of being level.

“Aye, Captain?”

“I’d like the status of—” The ship shuddered before he could finish the words. It did it again then groaned loudly from its bowels. “What the hell was that?”

Dumbfounded, the officer of the deck stared at him, wide-eyed.

“Sir,” she said, “I don’t know.”

“Find out.”

Stunned, she stood still.

Keegan frowned and barked, “Move it!”

“Yes, sir,” she replied, before scurrying out of the room.

He could only imagine what challenges he’d face on his first day back in command...

****

The air inside of Engine Room One on the Blanchard was musty and filled with the stench of lubricant. The loud clanking of a broken pump sounded through the room as various personnel did their best to shut it down, along with the engine it served, before it was too late.

“Sir,” one of the engineers called out, while approaching Keegan.

Her soot-stained face and jacket gave evidence to the battle she was having with the machine.

“It’s Inertial Dampener Number One. It’s gone. Apparently, the lubricator pump failed, and it locked up on us and blew,” she explained over the din.

Keegan’s swayed ever so slightly to the side as the damaged system began to affect the ship.

“Lieutenant, we’re traveling at 2C through free space.” He paused and braced himself against the side of a hatch. “How could something like this happen?”

The engineer blinked at him. “Sir. I’ll find out.”

“Well, how are we going to stop?” he asked, raising his voice in order to be heard.

“I don’t follow, sir,” she responded in an even tone.

“Let me rephrase. Lieutenant, at the speed we’re going, when we finally put on the brakes, we’ll be experiencing Newton’s Third Law in living color. So what’s going to keep us from being spots on the forward walls?”

In order to work in this area, everyone had to know physics better than Einstein. So if she had any bright ideas, he was ready to hear them.

“Sir, we lost only one dampener. We should be fine with the other three. Therefore, we have enough stability to make it to port where I can get the parts I need to make the repairs.”

“All right,” he said checking his watch. “We’ll be at Eckhardt in ten minutes. Fix what you can, and I’ll get you to port.”

“Yes, sir.”

“Carry on.”

“And, sir?”

“Yes, Lieutenant?”

“Steer us a clear path until we get them all back online. We can’t afford a bumpy ride," she replied.

“I’ll do my job. You just watch those other three. And tell everybody to hold on.”

Keegan watched the engineer head back to her station. He rubbed the bridge of his nose and sighed. A dampener blowing was one thing, but getting the new crew to ensure a smooth ride was another.

So there you have it.  All that research for one and a quarter's scene!  I like to think that it added a little gravity to the situation.  If not, it certainly added another layer tension for the commanding officer to deal with.  As for me, my days as a mechanic are over.  But hopefully with these tips, yours are just beginning.

My Sexy Saturday -- A Moment Too Hot To Contain

Welcome to My Sexy Saturday. Today I present to you a Sexy excerpt from one of my favorite leading male heroes, Marine Colonel Medoro Keegan. He is a strong a determined man, who's had his heart broken before. But when Caitlin enters his life, he believes he is ready to let her in. Their chemistry is undeniable and their love is forbidden. Will they overcome the odds?

Excerpt

Keegan paused, trying not to stumble over his words. “I’d like to apologize for my behavior the other day. It was unprofessional and uncalled for.”

It wasn’t much of an apology but it was all he could muster at the moment. Shifting his weight from one foot to the other, he wondered if she would become emotional and demand an answer for what had taken place? Or scream sexual harassment…. He braced himself, waiting for a response.

“I’m glad it happened," Caitlin replied.

Shocked, his eyes widened and his pulse quickened. He swallowed, forcing moisture into his dry throat. Her frank words hit him deep. The hole his wife left in his heart ached, almost killing him inside. Relationships, attachment, belonging to someone, needing another—those feelings were supposed to have been dead along with his wife. And here they were again, rearing their ugly head. Women were too dangerous to love because they wound up abandoning you, leaving you to face life alone.

He glanced at his left hand. He used to wear his gold wedding band as a tribute to the love he and his wife shared. Then it became a constant reminder that she was gone. Now he wondered if he was ready to have a ring on that finger again. Fear entered his heart.

“I’m not sure I am,” he replied, softly.

“I really am.” The sincerity in her voice was evident. “It was the first time I felt alive since I’ve been here, and I don’t regret it one bit.”

He didn’t know what to say. His first clash with her had distracted him to the point of madness. It had been some time since he’d had such a powerful encounter with a woman. The last one to push his buttons that hard, he wound up marrying.

Caitlin was stubborn, mouthy, somewhat insubordinate, and filled with an innate force he had not seen in sometime. She had no problem in standing up for who or what she believed in. He didn’t like the feelings she stirred in him. He dare not consider them. Especially with her. She was a subordinate and a cryo. It was against regulations for him to even think of starting anything with her.

He shifted his stance. His heart pounded in his ears and breaths quickened. “Ms. Driskoll. I don’t know what you expect from me.”

“Nothing more than I expect from myself.”

Before he knew it, he crossed the distance between them and swept her into a searing kiss. He caressed her body, touching every curve. Arousal sped through his body like lightening causing his cock to swell and become rigid. He dug his fingers in her hair and hungrily dominated her mouth, his tongue delving in, playing with hers. Gripping her waist, he lifted her up and placed on her the table. She arched her neck exposing her creamy skin. He nipped and bit at it enjoying its smoothness. He reached up and caressed her breasts, a need filling him to see them, taste them.

Summer Lovin' Blog Hop

There's something about hot nights and steamy days that bring out the sexy in all of us. Less clothes, suntans, holidays...what is it that you love about summer? Join us in our blog hop and blog about anything to do with summer. What are your best summer reads? What's your favorite thing about summer? Perhaps you have an excerpt that will get us all hot under the collar. Whatever it is you want to blog about, why don't you join us on our blog hop and have a bit of fun along the way!

The hop will run for 4 days until 8th August.

One of the best summers I had was on the beach of Lake Huron.  It had been a goal of mine to go there for some time and it did not disappoint.  Lake Huron is so huge, when on the lakeshore you can not see the land in this case Canada, on the the other side.  With the beautiful blue water and sky and the perfect breeze coming off the water, I felt like I was on a beach in California.  My friends and I spent only a weekend there but it was all I need to cool off from the hot and muggy heat that was south and west of us.

The entire time I was there, I kept thinking now I see why people love reading books while on the beach because it would have been a perfect place to settle in with my favorite romance novel!

So in honor of that, here's a selection for your summer reading.

Blurb--

A New Threat? After a long and vicious war, peace is on the horizon for Earth and its allies. However, a series of mysterious attacks on several secret military installations causes hostilities to rise once again.

Redemption. Having left under a cloud of disgrace, retired Marine Colonel Medoro Keegan is called back to duty.

Bound. His wife Caitlin, the only surviving member of her team, chooses to embrace life, albeit grudgingly, as a cryo soldier. Seen as sub-human, she is forced to serve a planet that denies her rights as a person.

Driven. Guided by their sense of duty and belief that some things are bigger than them, they are determined to risk it all.

Hope. The cost of war is high. Can their love and marriage survive? Or will it be killed off by the very same mission that brought them together?

An Excerpt--

Caitlin was a sight for sore eyes. She was beautiful. Her petite frame was perfectly accented by the curves of her figure. And her brown eyes and coffee-brown skin was smooth, creamy.

Standing at attention, she did not meet his gaze. Though it was customary not to do as a sign of military courtesy, he could tell she was not doing it for that reason. Her gaze was different. Circling her, he tried to see if he could catch her watching him out of the corner of her eye. In fact, she appeared to be staring blankly ahead.

Peering directly at her, he spoke in a soft tone. “At ease.”

She relaxed.

“Cate. Can you hear me?”

“Yes, sir,” she responded mechanically.

Pain pierced his insides. She was definitely not there. Keegan placed his hands on his hips and hung his head in defeat. The one thing that was supposed to go right did not. For whatever reason, they had placed her in a deeper state of mental control than she’d ever been in. He controlled the hostile emotions brewing with him. Touching her face gently, he felt her icy skin.

This is unacceptable! Not here. I will not let this happen here. Not under my command.

“Chief, listen up,” he said in an authoritative tone. He knew in this state, it was the only way he could speak to her and still have her respond.

“Yes, sir.” Her gaze became even more distant.

Her response fueled his anger. “You are going to hightail it down to the doc and receive a full examination. Tell him it is based on my orders. He will know what to do. Is that clear?”

“Yes, sir.”

Knowing that she was under the influence of cryo neurotransmitters, Keegan figured the only way to combat it was to get someone to reverse it. They usually wore off once she was away from the stimulus triggers for a long period of time. But considering her stimulus triggers were high-ranking officers in uniform and combat situations, being around here meant she was going to be in a drone zone for a very long time. The last thing he needed was a zombie on board, especially one in charge of the lives others.

Only the jerks in psyche warfare thought doing this to someone would be a good idea. As long as he was running the ship, none of that would be allowed. There weren’t going to be any super zombies soldiers on board his ship. And he’d rollover in his grave before he let them do it to his wife.

“After you come back from the doc, you will report to me, understood?”

“Yes, sir.”

“Are there any questions?”

“No, sir.”

“Dismissed.”

She did an about face before leaving the room. Keegan clasped his hands behind his back. In the blink of an eye, his joy had turned to sorrow. Now faced with the responsibility of looking after his wife, he wondered how could he handle the burden of command and still protect the woman he loved.

“Sir,” a soft voice, feminine and sweet, beckoned his attention. He knew the voice, like he knew himself. His heart skipped a beat.

Rising slowly from his chair, Keegan cleared his throat and straightened his uniform. Suddenly, the room seemed unbearably long as he walked the three feet or so to be near her.

As he took in every detail of her, he was stunned silent. She wore a Marine Corps uniform with Navy insignia, with her hair neatly pinned off her neck and shoulders. Her clothes were pressed with a crease that could cut a major artery and her demeanor was impeccable. Something was not right.

Still, Caitlin was a sight for sore eyes.

Here's a sexy deleted scene from my latest novel Cold Warriors

But First A Little Explanation

Originally published in 2007 with a defunct small e-publisher, Cold Warriors was my first foray as an author.  Like many writers, who can't seem to leave their work alone, I knew it could be better and set out to make revisions.

Though the original story is the same, I've extended some things and removed others.  In the process, I found a new home for it an awaited to be released from my contract.  Decadent Publishing picked up my novella with their help, I expanded and really grew as a romance author.  It was during that time, my tastes as a romance reader grew as well causing me to want to integrate my newly found interests into the story.

My editor, graciously accommodated me with most of my requests though wisely grabbing hold of the reigns on the rest.  When I pitched Cold Warriors to them, I still considered it to be a sweet romance, so thats what they were expecting and planned for on their rouster.  But as we went along tweaking and editing the story, my editor asked me to tone it down and I agreed cause it was only fair—after all she was bending over backwards (pardon the pun) to accommodate me.

So in the end, after being published it was placed in their erotic romance section.   Yay!!  Though not as hard as much, I am very happy with the end product.  But like most creative types, in order to get to that place, I had to cut.  Below is what resides with me on my hard drive.  And thanks to your support, it gets to see the light of day.

Enjoy!

Sexy Deleted Scenes~

Beller walked out of the meeting room while shoving the team's orders into the hands of an unsuspecting cryo. Caitlin followed him out into the corridor, hoping to catch him alone.  As other members of the squad bombarded him with questions, she realized it was not going to happen.

“Chief, can I talk to you for a second?”

He turned around slowly and motioned for her to follow.  Entering his room, he shut the door behind her took a seat at his desk.

“What's up?” he asked scratching the stubble forming on his chin.

“Why me?"

“Why not you?”

“I don’t know. Maybe its because I'm not qualified and have no real military experience outside playing a round of Call of Duty with my late husband.  What about one of the others? Don’t they have rank, more seniority?”

“That’s not how things work in this group. We’re not officially soldiers, so we don’t hold any rank.  Besides, I trust you.  I saw how you were on Eridani.  You've got a knack for this.  And,” he  stated leveling a steady gaze at her, “I know you won't let me down.”

She shoved her hands in her pockets and wondered where this sudden vote of confidence came from.  All throughout training, he'd told her to suck it up and all now she was his squad leader?

“As for rank, we’re more like contracted personnel.”

“Mercenaries,” she retorted

“Less soldier of fortune more black ops,” he added.
“Us? Great.”

Just when she thought she heard it all, the surprises kept on coming. Her stomach rolled and twisted.  Every night when she closed her eyes, she recalled images of things she was supposed to be able to do but when she awoke in the morning she had no real world memory of actually learning how to do it.

“Eh, don’t sweat it. Just make sure the sleeping area is ready for inspection, announce the uniform of the day, and make sure everyone reports in when they're supposed to.  You know shit like that.”

She waved her arms in resignation.  “Yes, sir.”

“Good, and don’t call me, sir. Call me Beller when we’re alone and Chief outside.”

“Got it.”

“Alright now get lost. I got to get some rest. You have exactly twelve hours of free time, enjoy it.  Cause after that real life begins.”

Scared half out of her mind, she headed for the only person on the ship capable of soothing her fears.

****

Caitlin entered storage bay delta. Beller's words of warning, took a back seat to the excitement filling her heart.  It had taken nearly all the control she could muster to not run full out up the various stair wells and corridors to get to him.

Devoid of people and quiet, the dimly lit, bay was filled with rows of attack fighters various states of disrepair.  Taking only moments for eyes to adjust, she stepped further inside.  Having never been inside that particular bay, she surveyed her surroundings.  Dense dark windowless walls, made of high stress metals, enclosed the chamber. Glancing up, she marveled at the struts jutting back and forth across the length of the ceiling like poles of a teepee.  The size of two football fields, it could easily hold three to four dozen craft with out seeming cramped.

Stepping over a long hose connected to one of the planes, she wondered where he could be.  His note had been simple, 'Meet me in storage bay delta at 1600 hours.'
Where inside the huge place was another story.  The soft taps of footsteps on the cement floor echoed in her ears.  Hearing someone clear their throat, she approached.

“I heard you and the general had meetings scheduled for this evening.”

“Who told you that?” he asked seeming preoccupied.

“Scuttlebutt. Just the rumor mill at work.”

“Nothing that mattered.  Besides, I had more important things on my mind than meetings.”

“Such as?”

Glaring at her, he returned his attention to the plane in front of him. Walking towards it, she touched its surface.  Her fingers buffeted against small bumps on its exterior.

“Did you used to fly these?” Caitlin asked trying to fill the silence.

“Yep,” he replied moving his hands across the planes smooth exterior.

She stood on her toes and peered into the cockpit. “Are all of them single seaters?”

“Yes.  They’re the descendants of the Aurora’s.” Keegan’s lips curled into a toothy grin.
His mature features melted into the boyish expression. He reminded her of a kid in a candy store.

“That's right, I remember hearing about them...they were experimental back when—” Caitlin hesitated.  What was she going to say? When I died?

“These are FA-343's, the main attack fighter in our air wing.”

“How come you don’t fly anymore?”

“Grounded,” he rumbled. “Wounded in action, my sight isn’t what it used to be, so they won't let me fly.”

She looked around and leaned against the plane  “Quiet here.”

“I come here to think sometimes.  I was beginning to think you weren't going to show.”

“There was some stuff I had to do first. It wasn't exactly easy coming this far amidship.  Where is everybody?  Shouldn't it be busy here?”

The bay though not built for launches, it was obvious that it acted more like a plane hospital where fighter came be to worked on or died and used for spare parts.

“Since we're in a long range CS departure, the crew is on a light rotation. Only the craft assigned to active detail are being maintenanced.  Don't worry we have privacy.  What was it like on Eridani?”

“Cold, lonely.”

Recalling her first nights away from him, on that desolate planet, made her quiver.  Soon after it was home.  It amazed her how easily one became accustomed to nothingness.

“What's the deal between you and Beller?  He's your new boyfriend?”

Caitlin chuckled.  Alarmed by her response, he squared his body, facing her head on.
“No,” she said recognizing his defensiveness.  “We're just friends.  He looks out for me.”

“He looks out for you?” Keegan asked his tone rising.

She swallowed.  The temperature seemed to rise around her.  “What I meant to say is...”

“You're dating--.”

“What are we in high school?”

“So my questions are childish?” he shot back.

“No, stop putting words in my mouth.”

“When were training, he showed me the ropes and kept me out of trouble.  It was purely platonic and still is.  End of story.”

“Did you miss me?” he asked without looking at her.

“Yes, I did.  Every day, I thought about you.  In fact I was balling so much, I got into trouble, that's why I needed Beller to bail me.”

Leading her further away from the main entryway towards the middle of the bay, he found a cubby in between two of the planes devoid of machinery.  Sweeping her into his arms, his mouth closed around hers.  She opened hers, allowing his tongue to taste hers.

She moaned as he caressed her hips and buttocks. White heat pulsed through her body straight to her center.  She wanted him now.  Why couldn't she have him now? Then she thought of the bay's cold hard floor, not the most comfortable place on the ship. Then there was his willingness, was he ready to go farther?

As if reading her mind, he stepped away and glanced at her chest.
“Lay down,” he commanded softly.

On the floor, Caitlin opened her legs.  Keegan climbed on top of her kissing her face and neck. His rough calloused his snaked underneath, her sheet kneading her swollen breasts.  Lifting up the top, he ripped her bra, exposing her hard nipple to the bay's cool air.

Licking and sucking it, Caitlin moaned.  Every nerve tingled from his touch as her center oozed with moisture.

Adjusting his position, he gazed into her eyes as he unzipped her pants and pushing them beneath her hips.  Stopped by the presence of her boots, which she had not taken off, her flipped her over and placed her on hands and knees.

She bit her lips and groaned as he rubbed his cock against her wet folds.  Placing his rock hard tip at her opening, he nudged her legs further apart.  Gasping as he stretched her, he gently pushed himself inside her, sinking all the way into the root.

Back and forth, he moved slowly pulling out of her before pushing back in.  Each movement pressing against her cervix with glorious pressure.  The sounds of his agonized breathing surrounded her, making her even more aroused.

Pushing into her once again and holding still, he grunted as a liquid warmth, pulsed through her interior.  She squeaked as her pussy clenched him.  Grasping her hips, he held still before pulling out.  Wanting more of him, she arched her back, he thrust into her again and again, making her grunt.

Thrusting into her again and again while angling up, he hit her sweet spot making her catch her breath.

“Oh god, I'm going to come,” she groaned as the coil inside her tightened.

Her body shook with each powerful move of his hips while his thickness cause glorious agony.  Bending forward, he embraced her and kissed her passionately, alighting every nerve in her body.  Smelling his sweet musk, she squeezed her eyes shut and keened her delight.
